Fotoateliér Jana Mulače představoval pražskou špičku především v 80. a 90. letech 19. století, a to hlavně pro umělce a zanícené vlastence. Největším přínosem Jana Mulače je především jeho úzká spolupráce s Prozatímním a Národním divadlem stejně jako s koncertními interprety domácími i zahraničními. Kromě toho se pohyboval ve společenských kruzích kolem Vojty Náprstka, rodiny Fričovy ad. Na tvorbu svého strýce navázal Josef Mulač, jehož zásluhou byla zachována alespoň část rozsáhlého archivu negativů Jana Mulače, doplněného o významné negativy vlastní. Kniha soustřeďuje několik tisíc negativů a pozitivů ze sbírek Národního muzea, Literárního archivu Památníku národního písemnictví, Archivu Národního divadla i z dalších archivů. muzeí a soukromých sbírek. V mnoha případech nebyly dosud publikovány nebo správně určeny. Přináší nové poznatky o historii ateliéru a jeho sídel.
